Competition between epithelial tissue elasticity and surface tension in cancer morphogenesis

چکیده
We derive a continuum mechanical model to capture the morphological changes occurring at pretumoral stage of epithelial tissues. The proposed aims investigate competition between bulk elasticity epithelium and surface tensions apical basal sides. According this model, when apico-basal tension imbalance reaches critical value, subcritical bifurcation is triggered attains its physiological folded shape. Based on data available in literature, our predicts that cells are softer than healthy cells.

Yield stress and elasticity influence on surface tension measurements.
We have performed surface tension measurements on carbopol gels of different concentrations and yield stresses. Our setup, based on the force exerted by a capillary bridge on two parallel plates, allows us to measure an apparent surface tension of the complex fluid and to investigate the influence of flow history. More precisely the apparent surface tension measured after stretching the bridge ...
متن کاملModeling Tissue Morphogenesis and Cancer in 3D
Three-dimensional (3D) in vitro models span the gap between two-dimensional cell cultures and whole-animal systems. By mimicking features of the in vivo environment and taking advantage of the same tools used to study cells in traditional cell culture, 3D models provide unique perspectives on the behavior of stem cells, developing tissues and organs, and tumors. These models may help to acceler...
متن کاملParallels between tissue repair and embryo morphogenesis.
Wound healing involves a coordinated series of tissue movements that bears a striking resemblance to various embryonic morphogenetic episodes. There are several ways in which repair recapitulates morphogenesis. We describe how almost identical cytoskeletal machinery is used to repair an embryonic epithelial wound as is involved during the morphogenetic episodes of dorsal closure in Drosophila a...
متن کاملTissue morphogenesis: a surface buckling mechanism.
Surface patterns can emerge during growth of anisotropic tissues because of surface buckling. This morphogenetic scenario is examined in the present paper based on a simple phenomenological theory of tissue growth. In particular, we show that constrained growth can lead to tissue compression, which in turn may result in surface buckling of the tissue. The latter means the appearance of wavy pat...
متن کاملCan tissue surface tension drive somite formation?
The prevailing model of somitogenesis supposes that the presomitic mesoderm is segmented into somites by a clock and wavefront mechanism. During segmentation, mesenchymal cells undergo compaction, followed by a detachment of the presumptive somite from the rest of the presomitic mesoderm and the subsequent morphological changes leading to rounded somites. We investigate the possibility that min...
